Agoraphobia: Understanding the Fear of Places and Situations

1 minutes Read Time04 June 2026Dr. Mahmut Bektas

Agoraphobia is more than simply a fear of open spaces. It is an anxiety disorder characterised by an intense fear of situations where escape may feel difficult or help may not be available if panic-like symptoms occur. People with agoraphobia often avoid public transport, crowded places, shopping centres, open spaces, or even leaving home alone. Left untreated, the condition can significantly restrict daily life and lead to social isolation.

This article explores the symptoms, causes, and relationship between agoraphobia and panic disorder, while highlighting evidence-based treatment approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and medication when appropriate. It also provides practical self-help strategies that can support recovery and help individuals gradually regain confidence and independence.
